For example, the article may be a nanoparticle or a surface, a portion of which has a roughness characterized by a radius of curvature of about 1000 nm or less. A monolayer coating disposed on the surface includes a plurality of ligands organized into ordered domains having a characteristic size of less than or about equal to 10 nm.
