An embodiment provides an apparatus that includes a marker circuit for saving a tripwire file in a protected set of files that includes at least one normal file. The apparatus also includes a monitor circuit for detecting an indicium of an activity related to the tripwire file. The apparatus further includes a notification circuit for generating a signal indicating an occurrence of an unauthorized activity related to the protected set of files in response to the detected indicium of an activity related to the tripwire file.
