Unionpay is China's national payment system. Established in 2002, since 2005 it has acquired the actual status of an international one. The initiators of the creation were the State Council and the People's Bank of China. Its shareholders are more than 200 financial institutions.
2001 - the UnionPay logo was created.
2002 - China UnionPay company was founded — "United Bank Card Company of China". The Commercial and Industrial Bank of China has established a card center.
2004 - UnionPay cards began to be accepted in Hong Kong.
2005 - UnionPay cards began to be accepted in the USA.
2010 - UnionPay took the first place in the world in the number of issued plastic cards
2011 - The Chinese Payment Operating Association was founded.
2012 - UnionPay International was founded in Shanghai
2015 - UnionPay took the first place in the world in terms of the number of transactions, ahead of the Visa system.
At the end of 2018, the share of UP cards in global circulation was 45%, which is 1% more than in 2017.
As of December 2019, UnionPay payment cards are accepted in more than 177 countries around the world, banks in 58 countries issue UnionPay cards.
