The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is an organization founded by Jimmy Carter and the United States Congress on August 4, 1977. It is headquartered in the James V. Forrestal Building in Washington, D.C., United States. The DOE is a part of the Federal government of the United States.
The DOE owns several research facilities and laboratories, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Idaho National Laboratory. Additionally, the DOE owns the BREN Tower, National Synchrotron Light Source, and National Synchrotron Light Source II.
The department also operates various offices and administrations, such as the Office of Science, National Nuclear Security Administration, and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
The DOE is responsible for a multitude of patents, with at least seven patents assigned under its name.
