The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is an organization within the federal government of the United States. Founded on July 1, 1870, the department is headquartered at the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building and operates as part of the United States government.
The DOJ oversees several subsidiaries, which include the following organizations: Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), Executive Office for Immigration Review, and Office of Justice Programs.
Furthermore, the DOJ also encompasses the Civil Division, Tax Division, Civil Rights Division, Antitrust Division, Criminal Division, War Division, Environment and Natural Resources Division, and National Security Division. The United States Marshals Service and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) also fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice.
