The United States Department of the Air Force is a subsidiary department of the United States Department of Defense. They are tasked with supporting the joint mission of the United States Department of Defense with a specialized focus on air, space, and cyberspace fields. And their vision to achieve their role includes providing air, space and cyber capabilities for use by combatant commanders and being stewards of the Air Force resources in service to the American People.
The Department of the Air Force was formed on September 18, 1947 as per the National Security Act of 1947 and it includes all elements and units of the United States Air Force (USAF) and the United States Space Force (USSF). The Department of the Air Force is led by the Secretary of the Air Force, which is a civilian and in 2020 is a position held by Barbara M. Barrett. The office of the Secretary of the Air Force is subject to the authority, direction, and control of the Secretary of Defense.
The highest ranking military officers in the Department of the Air Force, and the senior military advisors to the Secretary of the Air Force, are the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Chief of Space Operations. In 2020, these positions are held by General Charles Q. Brown, Jr. and General John W. "Jay" Raymond, respectively.
