The University of Chicago (UChicago) is a private research university in Chicago, Illinois. The university's main campus is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago's south side and it operates seven international campuses and centers throughout the world. The University of Chicago was founded in 1890. In 2021, UChicago enrolled 17,470 students, including 7,011 undergraduate students and 10,459 graduate students, and had 193,885 alumni worldwide. In 2021, ninety-four Nobel laureates were affiliated with UChicago and it was ranked #6 in the U.S. News & World Report Best College ranking.
University of Chicago offers fifty-three majors and forty-seven minors in the undergraduate College, with four divisions and seven professional schools for graduate study, in addition to the University’s more than 140 research institutes and centers. The university's divisions and graduate schools include the Biological Sciences Division, Chicago Booth School of Business, Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, Divinity School, Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies, Harris School of Public Policy, Humanities Division, Law School, Physical Sciences Division, Pritzker School of Medicine, Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, and Social Sciences Division.
The University of Chicago maintains research relationships with affiliated labs, including two US Department of Energy laboratories, Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab, and the Marine Biological Laboratory. UChicago operates museums and professional performance spaces on campus, including the Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry, Green Line Performing Arts Center, Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, Oriental Institute Museum, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, and Smart Museum of Art. UChicago operates the University of Chicago Press, which has been publishing books for scholars, students, and the general public since 1892.
In June 2021, the University of Chicago consolidated endowment ended FY21 at $11.6 billion. Through the UChicago Startup Investment Program, University of Chicago has invested in Ladder, Mindful Care, Super.tech, Quansa, Foxtrot, rePurpose Global, Tovala, Ascent, AMOpportunities, ClostraBio, and ExplORer Surgical.
