The University of Kiel, also known as Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, is a public educational institute located in Kiel, Germany. It was founded by Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in 1665. The university focuses on the industries of education, higher education, and university.
In addition to being an organization and educational institute, the University of Kiel is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Schleswig-Holstein. The university is affiliated with the European University Association and the European Association for International Education.
The University of Kiel has the motto "Pax optima rerum". Its subsidiaries include the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the Software Engineering Group.
