The University of Malta (UM) is a public educational institution in Malta, specializing in higher education and research. It was founded on November 12, 1592, by Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. The university is based in Msida and employs around 1,891 staff members.
UM has been known by several names over the years, such as Collegium Melitense, Pubblica Università di Studi Generali, Royal University of Malta, École Centrale, and L-Università ta Malta. The university's motto is "Ut Fructificemus Deo," which translates to "We should bring forth fruit unto God" in English.
