Main characteristics
About 600 thousand people live in the city. However, over 2.3 million people live in the Vancouver metropolitan area. After Toronto and Montreal, it is the largest densely populated area in Canada.
The Vancouver region was first explored by Europeans in 1778 by James Cook. The first European settlement (Fort Langley) appeared here in 1827, although the locals (Indians) had lived in these territories at that time for more than 3 thousand years. Today, the bulk of the population of Vancouver is Anglo-Canadians and immigrants from Europe. However, the Asian diaspora (Southeast Asia, China) has also grown in the city.
Vancouver has a highly developed economy: forestry and mining enterprises operate here, high technology, tourism, and services are actively developed. In half an hour's drive from the city, there are famous ski resorts. The film industry is also of great importance for the economy of Vancouver (almost every tenth Hollywood movie is filmed in Vancouver).
Among the main attractions of the city is its center with skyscrapers, the famous Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, a planetarium, the Maritime Museum, the Oceanarium, etc.
