Vasil Bykaŭ (born 19 June 1924, Vitebsk Region; died 22 June 2003, Minsk) was a Belarusian writer, screenwriter, journalist, public figure, and politician. He held citizenship in the Soviet Union and Belarus. He was known as an essayist, short story author, and opinion journalist, with his work spanning various genres.
Throughout his career, Bykaŭ received a number of prestigious awards, including the Order of the Patriotic War, USSR State Prize, Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, Hero of Socialist Labour, and Medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945". Additionally, he was recognized with the Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Banner of Labour, Order of the Red Star, Order of Friendship of Peoples, Jubilee Medal "50 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945", Jubilee Medal "Twenty Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945", Medal "For Battle Merit", and Francysk Skaryna Medal.
