The Vector Institute is an independent, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), excelling in machine and deep learning.
The Vector Institute launched in March 2017 with generous support from the Government of Canada, Government of Ontario, and private industry, and in partnership with the University of Toronto and other universities.
The Vector Institute will work with institutions, industry, start-ups, incubators and accelerators to advance AI research and drive its application, adoption and commercialization across Canada
Vector Institute specializes in the transformative field of artificial intelligence, excelling in machine learning and deep learning. The institute raised $100 million from the state budget. Another $90 million was invested by 34 private companies from health care, finance, insurance, education, retail, advanced manufacturing, construction and transportation. The institute plans to develop and disseminate artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the country, producing top experts in deep learning, machine learning and neural networks.
"We wanted to create a magnet for talent and a pool of creative companies that develop and use artificial intelligence technology. Artificial intelligence research is underway in Canada, we need to monetize it. The government, universities, researchers want to seize the opportunity," said Vector Institute board member Jordan Jacobs.
According to the University of Toronto website, the Vector Institute was opened with the support of the Canadian government, the University of Toronto, the Ontario provincial government and the private sector as part of the Government of Canada's Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy. The strategy has an allocation of $125 million for development in 2017.
The new agency has $50 million in start-up capital from Ontario's budget and $40-50 million in federal funds. According to The New York Times, the institute's potential backers include Google, consulting firm Accenture, processor developer Nvidia, Canadian banks Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank and Air Canada.
