Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, born in 1952 in Chidambaram, India, is a chemist, biochemist, and biologist. He is known for his work on the structure and function of the ribosome. Ramakrishnan's mother, R. Rajalakshmi, was a scientist.

Ramakrishnan was educated at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Ohio University, and the University of California, San Diego. In his career, Ramakrishnan has received numerous awards, including the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Knight Bachelor, the Membership of the National Academy of Sciences, the 2007 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine, and the 2010 Padma Vibhushan.
