Vital Therapies is a biotechnology company developing a cell therapy products to treat acute liver failure that is headquartered in San Diego, California and was founded in 2003.
Cell-based therapy is the primary focus of Vital Therapies, and for this purpose they have developed their ELAD System. ELAD is a bio-artificial liver therapy that is designed to operate outside the body and assist the patient's liver in healing back to a healthy status. The system can also be used to stabilize and maintain a patient's liver.
Vital Therapies has changed its name to Immunic, Inc., and now operates as a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company. Oral immunology therapies are the pipeline of Immunic, especially specific therapies dedicated to treating chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Some of the focuses include treating relapsing and/or remitting multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, as well as psoriasis.
The company currently has three small molecule products in development. Their IMU-838 is a selective immune modulator aimed at minimizing the intracellular metabolism of an active immune cell. The IMU-935 has been developed to bind to RORyt receptors and prevent activity. The third product Immunic has in development targets the restoration of a patient's intestinal barrier function, and is named the IMU-856.
