Vladimir Arnold (1937-2010) was a renowned mathematician, professor, scientist, and physicist born in Odessa and holding citizenship in both Soviet Union and Russia. He was educated at Moscow State University and its Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. Arnold passed away in Paris.
Arnold's major doctoral advisor was Andrey Kolmogorov, and he supervised numerous doctoral students, including Vladimir Fock, Alexander Givental, Victor Anatolyevich Vassiliev, Victor Goryunov, Alexander Varchenko, Sabir Gusein-Zade, Emil Horozov, Boris Shapiro (mathematician), Vladimir Zakalyukin, Mikhail Shapiro, and Boris Khesin.
Some of Arnold's notable contributions to mathematics and physics include the Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser theorem, Hilbert's thirteenth problem, Arnold tongue, Arnold diffusion, and the Arnold–Givental conjecture.
