Walther Nernst was born in Wąbrzeźno on June 25, 1864. He held citizenships in Germany and Poland. Nernst was a chemist and physicist by occupation. He studied at various universities, including the University of Zurich, University of Würzburg, Humboldt University of Berlin, Leipzig University, and University of Graz. Friedrich Kohlrausch was his doctoral advisor.
As a professor, Nernst advised several doctorate students such as Irving Langmuir, Robert von Lieben, Francis Simon, William Duane, Arnold Eucken, Max Speter, and Fritz Lange.
He is best known for his work on the Third Law of Thermodynamics. In recognition of his contributions to the field, Nernst received the 1920 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Franklin Medal.
Walther Nernst passed away on November 18, 1941, in Niwica, Żary County.
