William Giauque was born on December 5, 1895, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He held citizenship in both the United States and Canada. Giauque was a chemist and an engineer. He received his education at the University of California, Berkeley.
Giauque's academic discipline was physical chemistry, and he was supervised by his doctoral advisor, George Ernest Gibson. Throughout Giauque's career, he mentored several doctoral students, including Theodore H. Geballe, David A. Shirley, and Thomas Reichert.
Over the course of his career, Giauque received numerous awards and accolades. Notably, he was awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Willard Gibbs Award in 1951.
