William Ramsay , born on October 2, 1852 in Glasgow , was a chemist, scientist, professor, and historian from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . He obtained his education from the University of Glasgow, The Glasgow Academy, and the University of Tübingen . Wilhelm Rudolph Fittig served as his doctoral advisor, and Ramsay, in turn, advised Morris Travers .
Ramsay was known for his discovery of noble gases and his creation of argon . In recognition of his work, he received the 1904 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Davy Medal . Sir William Ramsay passed away on July 23, 1916, in High Wycombe .
