William Vickrey was born on June 21, 1914, in British Columbia, and later held citizenship in the United States. Vickrey was a renowned economist who was educated at Yale University, Yale College, Phillips Academy, and Columbia University, where he later completed his doctoral studies under the guidance of Carl Shoup. As a professor, Vickrey had doctoral students such as David Colander and Jacques Drèze.
In his career, Vickrey was recognized for his work on Vickrey auction, Revenue equivalence theorem, and Congestion pricing. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1996, the same year that he died on October 11 in Harrison, New York. Apart from the Nobel Prize, Vickrey also received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
