Kitamura was born in Hokkaido, Japan, and grew up surrounded by music and instruments, such as the violin, piano, and saxophone. She attended Sapporo Visual Arts College and graduated with a degree focused on music production.
In 2011, Kitamura joined FromSoftware, a Japan-based company that develops and distributes video games. She held the role of composer and worked on the music for video games such as Armored Core: Verdict Day, Dark Souls III, Bloodborne, Mobile Suit Gundam UC, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Kitamura also worked on the soundtrack for Elden Ring, a video game that was created from a collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki (who also works for FromSoftware) and George R.R. Martin. She was the winner of a National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers (NAVGTR) Award in 2023 for Original Dramatic Score category for the Elden Ring soundtrack.
Kitmura announced in August 2023 that she was leaving FromSoftware to work as an independent composer. She states that in addition to being able to compose dark fantasy orchestral music for video games, she also composes other styles of music, such as easy-listening music.
