Yuri Gagarin (born Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin on 9 March 1934) was a citizen of the Soviet Union and is best known as the first man in space . Gagarin was an aircraft pilot, armed forces officer, and politician . He was educated at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy .
Gagarin was the son of Alexey Ivanovich Gagarin and Anna Timofeevna Matveeva, and he was the father of children with the same names . He had the nickname "Cedar" . Yuri Gagarin passed away on 27 March 1968 in Kirzhach, Vladimir Oblast .
Throughout his life, Gagarin was the recipient of numerous awards. Some of his most notable accolades include Hero of the Soviet Union , Order of Lenin , Order of Georgi Dimitrov , Order of Playa Girón , and Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR . He was also awarded the Order of the Flag of the Republic of Hungary , De la Vaulx Medal , Star of the Republic of Indonesia , Order of the Cross of Grunwald , Order of the Nile , Hero of Labor (Vietnam) , Order of Aeronautical Merit (Brazil) , and Order of Karl Marx . Additionally, Gagarin was honored with the title of Merited Master of Sports of the USSR and received the Medal "For Impeccable Service" .
