Data.ai is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Its insights are utilized by developers, publishers, and advertisers to drive business revenue and engagement.
Cofounders Bertrand Schmitt and Bjørn Stabell launched App Annie on Apple's App Store in 2010. Shortly after, the company was relocated to the city of Beijing as Schmitt thought China would be "an emerging ground zero for the new mobile world;" he also thought it would be too expensive to operate in the United States at the time. The App Store's sales model helped generate free awareness of App Annie, which proved key to the company's early growth.
On September 14, 2021, App Annie and cofounder Schmitt were charged with securities fraud by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, specifically with violating the anti-fraud provisions of Section 10(b) of the Exchange Act and Rule 10b-5. The SEC alleged that App Annie used non-aggregated, non-anonymized data to alter its model-generated estimates between late 2014 and mid-2018 in order to inflate its sales prices to trading firms. Furthermore, the organization misrepresented the data generation process to its customers in various ways. App Annie consented to a cease-and-desist order and was given a penalty of $10 million, while Schmitt was given a penalty of $300,000. In addition, Schmitt was prohibited from serving as an officer or director of a public company for the following three years.
In February 2022, App Annie rebranded to data.ai.
