In the final, which then consisted of two games, Ribbeck's team had to fight with Espanyol. The first match in Barcelona ended with the defeat of the Germans 0:3, and it seemed that all hopes for the championship were destroyed. But on May 18, a real miracle happened in Leverkusen, which all German football specialists will admire for a long time. Bayer, led by Ribbeck, took the field with as many as four strikers and completely outplayed Espanyol 3-0, but in the penalty shootout, the shocked Spaniards could not recover and lost 2:3! It was the first and so far the last international trophy of the "aspirin team".
It was only after the UEFA Cup semi-final victory over Werder that fans began to believe in the reality of the opportunity to win the first European trophy.
In 1988, one of the greatest events in the history of the union and in the coaching career of Erich Ribbeck took place.
This success became real thanks to the magnificent Korean striker Cha Bum Kun, who scored seventeen goals in the championship.
In 1984, after half a century of separation, the long-awaited reunion of the two sports unions of Leverkusen that had fallen out at the time took place, and the football team acquired a new full name – TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The colors of the football department remained black and red.
Kremer was replaced by Erich Ribbeck, whose name is associated with the first truly successful era in the history of the team. The club began to regularly finish in the top half of the Bundesliga, and in 1986, thanks to the sixth place in the national championship, Bayer gets the opportunity to compete in European Competitions for the first time.
However, the first seasons in the Bundesliga were reduced to a struggle for survival for Bayer. Leverkusen came especially close to the dangerous line in the 1981/1982 season. Then the club was saved only by the timely resignation of coach Kremer and the great luck accompanying the team in the play-off matches with Offenbach.
Bayer held its first Bundesliga match in Munich, where it lost to Bayern Munich with a score of 1:3. The only goal against the Bavarians was scored by Dietmar Demuth from the penalty spot. It is noteworthy that in the second leg in Leverkusen, Bayer won against Bayern with a score of 1-0, and the goal was scored from the penalty spot, and its author was Dietmar Demuth. Bayer finished its first season in the Bundesliga 1979/1980 on the 12th line.
That season, the club was coached by a well-known specialist Willibert Kremer, under whose leadership Jurgen Gelsdorf and Thomas Herster vividly revealed their potential. It was Kremer who attracted Rainer Kalmund to work at the club, who would later become the famous sports director of Bayer.
During the 1975/1976 season, after lengthy conversations with the plant's managers, the football club's management managed to attract the attention of the concern's leaders. The fact that football in Germany was becoming increasingly popular played a role, and football players from Leverkusen could become a "walking advertisement" for pharmaceutical concern drugs. Money poured into the football club like a river, and Bayer immediately gets into the Second Bundesliga. After a tense first season and a tough struggle for survival, a couple of years later the team became the main favorite of the championship and in 1979, after a long pause, returned to the main German football league. On May 12, 1979, Bayer Leverkusen drew 3-3 with Bayer Jurdingen, which allowed Leverkusen to enter the Bundesliga directly.
On June 15, 1975, Bayer celebrates promotion to the second Bundesliga. On this day, at the Haberland Stadion in Leverkusen in front of 10,000 spectators, Bayer achieved a 3-2 victory over Arminia from Hanover.
