The Abell Foundation is a private foundation focusing on increasing quality of life in Baltimore City and Maryland. The foundation was established in 1953, as a foundation of the A.S. Abell Company. Since 1986, it became an independent foundation that provides funding for non-profits (in the form of grants) and for businesses (in the form of direct investments).
The Abell Foundation provides funding for non-profits operating in these seven areas: education, workforce development, health and human services, community development, criminal justice and addiction, environment, as well as arts. While for businesses, The Abell Foundation focuses on investing in early-stage companies that offer significant social and economic benefits.
Abell Foundation has made investments in NextStep Robotics, Vixiar Medical, ReGelTec, Pixelligent, University of Maryland, RoundTrip, Lifesprout, Snag-A-Slip and Jetpack.
