Albert A. Michelson , also known as Albert Abraham Michelson , was born on December 19, 1852, in Strzelno, Poland . He held United States citizenship and was a physicist as well as an officer in the armed forces . Michelson was educated at the United States Naval Academy and Humboldt University of Berlin .
He is widely recognized for his work on the speed of light, hyperfine structure, fine structure, and the Michelson-Morley experiment, amongst other significant projects . Michelson dedicated his career to the field of physics .
Throughout his career, Michelson was advised by Hermann von Helmholtz and mentored notable doctoral students such as Robert Andrews Millikan, Henry Gale, and Isabelle Stone . His achievements garnered him the prestigious 1907 Nobel Prize in Physics .
