Andrew McCollum is an American entrepreneur, businessman, and angel investor born on September 4, 1983 in California. He is the co-founder of several companies including Facebook, Philo, Wirehog, and JobSpice.
McCollum also was an entrepreneur-in-residence at New Enterprise Associates and Flybridge Capital Partners.
McCollum attended Harvard University starting in 2004. After a leave of absence, during which time he was a co-founder and early contributor to Facebook, McCollum earned a Bachelor's of Computer Science. He later attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2010 where he earned a Master's in Mind, Brain, and Education.
In 2004, at Harvard McCollum was approached by Mark Zuckerberg be the first graphic designer for Facebook. McCollum designed Facebook's first logo and set of user interface icons. He was a part of the company until 2006, when he decided to return to Harvard to complete his Bachelor's degree.
Wirehog was a peer-to-peer file sharing service co-created by McCollum alongside his Facebook colleagues Mark Zuckerberg, Adam D'Angelo, and Sean Parker. The invite-only service, which used the social connections of Facebook users to build file-sharing networks, launched in October 2004 and was shut down in January 2006 as Facebook gained traction.
McCollum co-founded JobSpice, a resume preparation service aimed at college students, with Dane Hurtbise and Keller Rinaudo in late 2008. The company was backed by Y Combinator (S'09) and served over 600,000 students in the U.S. and Canada. The company closed down in September 2011.
In 2014, he started Philo, a live-streaming television service for college students. He partnered with Tuan Ho to start Philo and their original idea was to provide a service to stream TV on college campuses. With this company, he regularly meets with entertainment partners and investors to expand Philo services.
Philo has raised tens of millions of dollars from venture capitalists and video content producers since its inception. Its backers include Discovery, Viacom, A+E Networks, AMC, HBO, the National Education Association, CBC New Media Group, Felicis Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, and the family office of Mark Cuban, among others.
As of January 2020, McCollum has made 18 investments and has made exits on 9 of those investments. In 2011, he began serving as an advisor for Qui.It, a scrapbook platform that allows users to share their memories with friends in real-time. Qui.lt shut down in 2013.
