Asda is a British supermarket and retail chain headquartered in Leeds, United Kingdom. Asda was founded in 1965 by Peter Asquith, Fred Asquith, and Noel Stockdale. Asda was acquired by American retailer Walmart for £6.7 billion in 1999, at which time the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange. In 2019, Asda became the second-largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom by market share, behind Tesco. In 2021, Asda operated over 630 locations throughout the United Kingdom, had over 165,000 employees, and its online operations via asda.com served 98% of British households.
Asda operates physical stores of various sizes, including supercentres, superstores, supermarkets, Asda Living, and petrol stations, as well as online fashion retailer George, online grocery shopping platform Grocery Click and Collect, shopping via its mobile app for Apple and Android devices, Asda Logistics Services, and International Procurement Limited (IPL). In addition to retail operations, the company operates insurance and payment services and a mobile phone provider, through subsidiaries Asda Money and Asda Mobile.
