Authorea is a New York based technology company developing an online collaborative platform for academic and technical writing. The platform allows scientists, researchers, and scholars to interactively design, contribute, and collaborate on research documents in a single place. The company aims to encourage the dissemination of more open, transparent and reproduce-able research.
Authorea is a web-based document editor designed for scientific research documentation, collaboration, and publication. Authorea supports LaTeX editing with rich-text or markdown formatting for editing documents. It makes it easier for users to cite, include equations, host files, collaborate, and distribute the documents. Users can choose from over 8000 journal templates within the platform. The editor can search and manage full citations from CrossRef and PubMed from within the editor. The platform keeps versions of document and history of all edits from user and collaborators with Git, behind the scenes. For embedding code, equations, and visualization of data it supports Jupyter notebooks Plotly, D3.js, Carto framework.
The service is free to use for creating and publishing research paper to the public. Free users get 3 private documents, and students get 10. Paid plans are available to keep more than 10 documents private.
Co-founded by Alberto Pepe and Nathan Jenkins on June 2, 2012, the headquarter is located in Brooklyn, New York. Alberto is an astrophysicist and Nathan has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Geneva. Both founders worked in CERN before starting Authorea. Authorea was created because traditional word processing editors were not meant for research writing. Atypon, part of Wiley Publishing acquired Authorea in September of 2018.
