Azitra's platform uses a strain of bacteria from the skin microbiome, S. epidermidis, to modify the skin microbiome and deliver therapeutic protein to the target. The platform is modular and can modify S. epidermidis to secrete an array of therapeutically relevant proteins necessary in the treatment of multiple skin diseases.
Azitra's work is supported by NIH grants, private grants, and investment from Bios Partners and Breakout labs.
In May 2018, Azitra announced that it had secured $2.15 million in convertible debt financing to support advancement of the company's pipeline of dermatology and skin care products. The financing was led by new investor Connecticut Innovations, and existing investor Bios Partners. An additional new investor, KdT Ventures, joined the syndicate. This financing brings the total raised to date to $5.4 million.
