Bain & Company focus on hiring consultants through case interviews made to reflect challenges faced by the company's actual clients. The case interviews are given to candidates for consulting and non-consulting roles within the company. They help the company asses the following characteristics of job applicants: approach to problem solving, analytical and creative ability, use of data to quantify recommendations, communication skills, and proposal implementation strategies. Bain & Company offers two practice case interview scenarios on their website. One is focused on consulting an entrepreneur looking to open a coffee shop in a new city, and the second is about how to increase the revenue of a women's fashion company that has seen its profits declining for a couple years.
Bain & Company recruits from the top 20 business schools by running events and sending their associate consultants to the same school to obtain their MBAs. The company hires from about 60 different schools around the world. After hiring a recent MBA graduate Bain & Company hires them as interns they call summer associates or directly as full-time consultants. The summer associate program is a 10-week internship program, and 90% of the participants in the summer associate program become full-time consultants of Bain & Company after completion. After a consultant gains two years experience working at Bain & Company they are offered the opportunity to become case team leaders.
