Beryl (company)

Beryl is a London based technology company developing bike light accessories for accident prevention on bicycles. The company also supplies bikes and digital integration platform to work with bike sharing companies or local authorities to promote bike usage in urban areas. Originally named Blaze, the company re-branded itself as Beryl after trademark issues in the United States.

The company’s primary product “Laserlight” is a LED and laser emitting device powered by a dynamo. The laser projects a green bike silhouette on the ground five meters ahead of the rider. The objective is to warn vehicles and pedestrians of an oncoming bike. The Laserlight device is built to fit any bike without any modifications. The company also sells other bike light accessories including rear red lights which activate when the bike slows down. The product is sold in the United Kingdom and the United States through distributors and in other countries through their online store.

Beryl launched its bike sharing scheme on spring of 2019 to add 1,000 bikes on the streets of Bournemouth and Poole. The bikes have Beryl’s laser light system embedded, and the bikes are connected to the internet which reports the location to the bike share platform. The device is powered by a solar panel fitted on the bike’s front basket.

Emily Brooke founded the company in 2012 after graduating from the University of Brighton in Product Design with Professional Experience. Emily Brooke invented Blaze Laserlight as a project for her final year at Brighton. She then decided to crowd-fund the product through Kickstarter on 26th November 2012, where she raised £55,000 of £25,000 goal.
