Bitmain Technology Holding Company (“Bitmain”) is a privately-held Chinese multinational semiconductor and blockchain company, founded in 2013 by Jihan Wu and Micree Zhan. Bitmain is headquartered in Beijing, with offices and research centers in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Russia, Georgia, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Israel.
Bitmain designs and manufactures integrated circuit (IC) chips using ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) technology. In addition to its cloud-based AI chips, Bitmain offers high density server equipment, large-scale parallel computing software, and cloud solutions for blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Under its AntMiner brand, Bitmain manufactures bitcoin mining hardware designed to offer cryptocurrency. The company also operates cryptocurrency mining pools Antpool and BTC.com.
Bitmain's products support a wide range of cryptocurrency, blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning applications. Bitmain technology supports an extensive variety of blockchain platforms and startups. Bitmain’s AI chips are used for applications including blockchain securitization, facial recognition, automatic driving, smart cities, smart governance, smart security, and medical services.
In 2017, Frost & Sullivan reported that Bitmain was China’s second largest integrated circuit designer, and among the world's top ten largest.
In October 2021, Antpool, operated by Bitmain and the world's largest bitcoin mining pool by hashrate, announced that it would block internet access from mainland China and confirmed it would stop shipping Antminer equipment to mainland China, in order to comply with Chinese government regulations on crypto mining activities. The ban excludes Hong Kong and Singapore, and Antpool announced plans to operate out of its new headquarters in Singapore. In 2021, Bitmain announced its plans to offer assistance to clients that wish to relocate their cryptocurrency mining operations from China to other countries.
