Burcon Nutrascience is a food and biotechnology company operating out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, that was founded in November, 1998 as a venture capital pool corporation. Initially, Burcon Nutrascience was focused on evaluating assets, properties, and other businesses to acquire. It was not until October 8, 1999 when Burcon Nutrascience acquired a company operating out of Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada called BMW Canola, that Burcon Nutrascience pivoted to become a food and biotechnology company.
Burcon develops functionally and nutritionally valuable plant proteins.Burcon Nutrascience develops and produces plant-based products and ingredients for use in food and nutritional supplements. Notable products made by Buron Nutrascience include: CLARISOY, Peazazz, Puratein, Supertein, and cannabis extracts.
Burcon has a joint venture for a $65-million pea and canola protein production facility planned to be built in Manitoba. The venture is with investor group made up of Shaun Crew, Barry Tomiski and Ryan Bracken, al veterans of the agri-foods industry. Tomiski and Bracken will serve as co-CEOs and directors of the joint venture company is rebranded as Merit Functional Foods Corporation (Merit Foods). Merit Foods entered a royalty-bearing licence agreement with Burcon for production, sale and distribution of Peazazz, Peazac, Supertein, Puratein and Nutratein canola proteins. Burcon will be responsible to technology transfer to Merit Foods.
