Centrus Energy Corp is a company supplying nuclear fuel and services for the nuclear power industry. Centrus also offers its technical capabilities and engineering expertise to a wide range of customers outside of the nuclear fuel business, including turnkey engineering, design, and advanced manufacturing solutions for advanced reactor developers and others in the energy, aerospace, chemical, and defense sectors.
Centrus is working with the Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop and demonstrate advanced centrifuge uranium enrichment technology so that America can restore its domestic uranium enrichment capability. In 2016, the company successfully completed a three-year demonstration effort in Ohio and continues to improve the technology.
The Energy Policy Act of 1992 created the United States Enrichment Corporation, a government corporation, out of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Uranium Enrichment Enterprise. The new government corporation began operations in July 1993.
The U.S. government sold the company in an initial public offering in 1998, and USEC Inc., a private, investor-owned company, began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The company continued to operate the country’s Cold War-era enrichment plants until the last one, Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, was shut down in 2013.
After a financial restructuring in 2014, the company re-emerged as Centrus Energy Corp., with a stronger balance sheet and a new board of directors. In 2015, the Board selected a new leadership team, which is focused on expanding and diversifying its business.
Centrus Energy’s corporate headquarters are in Bethesda, Maryland, with facilities in Oak Ride, Tenessee and Piketon, Ohio. Centrus’ Oak Ridge location is home to its gas centrifuge uranium enrichment technology, engineering, and advanced manufacturing. At Centrus’ Piketon facility, the company successfully demonstrated its advanced U.S. gas centrifuge uranium enrichment technology. Centrus is now conducting decontamination and decommissioning activities at the facility, which is located on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant reservation.
Centrus Japan, LLC a subsidiary company has offices in Tokyo to provide a local liaison for the company’s key utility customers and business partners in Japan and other key countries in the region.
