Covariant (formerly Embodied Intelligence) is a Berkeley-based artificial intelligence software company which specializes in creating products that can be used to teach robots new skills. The software produced by the company uses deep reinforcement and imitation learning in order to teach robotic devices. The stated intention of the company is to teach individual robots to complete a range of tasks, as opposed to just one and to have those robots be trained in any manufacturing environment in a short amount of time.
The software created at Covariant is meant to be used with robotics in the manufacturing industry in an effort to automatize processes in places such as factories. The software can teach robotics to conduct tasks such as picking objects out of bins, assembling electronics, and manipulating objects such as wires, cables, and fabric. In order to learn these movements, Covariant connects a human to the robot using virtual reality devices and motion trackers. The robot can learn to do the task from this data and then imitate the task.
