Cyril Norman Hinshelwood was a chemist born on June 19, 1897, in London, United Kingdom . He was educated at the University of Oxford , Balliol College, Oxford , and Westminster City School . Hinshelwood's primary academic discipline was physical chemistry , and he focused on chemical kinetics . His doctoral advisor was Harold B. Hartley , and he advised Sydney Brenner during his doctorate .
Hinshelwood received the 1956 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and was awarded the Copley Medal as well . He passed away in London on October 9, 1967 .
