Dechert is a law firm founded in Philadelphia in 1875 by Wayne MacVeagh, a Yale graduate, and George Tucker Bispham, a University of Pennsylvania Law School graduate. The firm employs over 900 lawyers in twenty-two offices around the world, with practices in corporate and securities, complex litigation, finance and real estate, financial services, asset management, and private equity.
Among the first of Dechert's clients was The Pennsylvania Railroad in 1877, a client for nearly one hundred years. Other clients included Girard Trust Company, The Philadelphia Savings Fund Society, the Pennsylvania Fire Insurance Company, and the Westmoreland Coal Company.
During the beginning of World War II, then known as Barnes, Myers & Price, the firm lost many of its lawyers to military service. They then merged with Dechert, Smith & Clark, a Philadelphia law firm, founded by Robert Dechert and Curtis Bok in 1930.
Some of the firm's most well-known lawyers have gone on to become US district court judges and serve on both presidential and Wall Street teams.
