Deutsche Telekom AG (or DT) is a German telecommunications company headquartered in Bonn and is the largest telecommunications provider in Europe. DT was formed on January 1, 1995, when the state-owned monopoly Deutsche Bundespost was privatized and became a publicly listed stock corporation. Deutsche Telekom currently provides service to more than fifty countries, including the United States, through subsidiary T-Mobile USA. The company generates 70% of its revenue through subsidiaries outside Germany.
The German government currently holds 31.9% of the company stock; the state owns 14.5% directly, with another 17.4% ownership through government bank KfW.
Deutsche Telekom became privatized following the “German Law on the Reorganization of Posts and Telecommunications,” or Postreform II. This followed Postreform I, which separated the Deutsche Bundespost into three divisions: Post, Postbank, and Telekom.
Deutsche Telekom previously held a four-pillar strategy, consisting of four main business units: T-Com (fixed-line network), T-Mobile (mobile communications network), T-Online (internet services), and T-Systems (customer service and solutions). T-Com and T-Online merged into the broadband/fixed network business unit in 2005, with the unit once again changing to T-Home in 2008. A T-Mobile and T-Home merge in April 2010 created Telekom Deutschland GmbH.
Currently, DT holds four operating segments, including Germany, USA, Europe, and Systems Solutions.
The company serves more than 235 million mobile customers and provides over 27 million fixed-network lines and 21 million broadband lines.
Deutsche Telekom runs numerous operations in Central Europe through their own and other telecom companies. DT holds shares in Slovak Telekom, Magyar Telekom, and OTE, telecommunication operators in Slovakia, Hungary, and Greece. These telephone companies and the main entity provide billing voice and mobile, commercial roaming, internet, access, transport, and in-flight connectivity services.
Deutsche Telekom operates subsidiaries in over fifty countries worldwide, with over 70% of their revenue coming from these wholly-or partially-owned companies. Their largest international subsidiaries include T-Mobile in the US and Tele2 in the Netherlands.
