ETH Zurich, in English the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, is a public research university based in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and management. The Swiss Federal Government founded ETH Zurich in 1855 under the name “Polytechnikum." The QS World University Rankings 2022 placed ETH Zurich as the joint 8th best university in the world.
ETH Zurich is one of Switzerland's two federal institutes of technology; the other being EPFL in Lausanne (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). The ETH domain also comprises four research institutes: the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI); the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL); the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa); and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).
The university has over 23,000 students from 121 countries, of which over 4,000 are doctoral students. It employs 6,400 scientific and 3,000 technical and administrative staff. The primary teaching language for undergraduates is German, while the majority of master's and doctoral studies are in English. Located in Switzerland's largest city, Zurich, the university is split across two main locations: downtown Zurich and a modern campus built on the city's outskirts.
