Edward, King of Portugal, also known as Duarte and the King Philosopher, was born on October 31, 1391 in Viseu, Portugal. He was the son of John I of Portugal and his wife, Philippa of Lancaster. Edward was the oldest member of the "Illustrious Generation".
King Duarte had six children, including Afonso V of Portugal, Ferdinand, Duke of Viseu, Eleanor of Portugal, Holy Roman Empress, Joan of Portugal, Catherine of Portugal (nun), and João Manuel (bishop of Guarda). He was married to Eleanor of Aragon, Queen of Portugal. Edward had Portuguese nationality and held citizenship in Portugal.
King Duarte was known for contributing to the development of Portuguese civilization during the 15th century. In addition to being King, Edward was also a writer. He became a Knight of the Garter in his lifetime.
King Edward of Portugal died on September 18, 1438, in Tomar.
