Entrepreneurship Academies, through the Mike and Renee Child Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of California, Davis, work to help students, postdocs, and faculty gain the knowledge and network in order to identify, develop, and validate the commercial potential of research or an idea.
Each academy focuses on lectures, practical exercises, networking sessions, and hands-on experiences. The goal is to help participants understand how research and ideas can be commercialized, how to build a business around those ideas, and where those ideas can exist in a given industry and marketplace. This includes helping participants to understand how to identify market needs and opportunities, and networking opportunities to develop a support network and a network of peers and experts to help support a possible venture.
Through the academies, participants are provided with the following tools and activities:
- An opportunity to explore market opportunities for an idea or a given piece of research
- Daily seminars and interactive sessions taught by leading investors, industry executives, entrepreneurs, and university faculty
- The tools to communicate the broader potential of given research
- Evening mentoring sessions with industry executives and investors
