EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), or the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, is a public research university based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Specializing in natural sciences and engineering, the university has over 11,500 students and over 350 laboratories and research groups on campus. The QS World University Rankings 2022 placed ETH Zurich as the joint 14th best university in the world.
EPFL is one of Switzerland's two federal institutes of technology, the other being ETH Zurich. The ETH domain also comprises four research institutes: the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI); the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL); the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa); and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).
The EPFL was officially founded on January 1st, 1969. However, the history of education on the campus dates back to 1853 with the Ecole Spéciale de Lausanne, a private initiative inspired by the Ecole Central de Paris. Students were trained as high-level builders, with the first five students graduating in 1855.
The main EPFL campus in Lausanne is on the shore of Lake Geneva and consists of sixty-five buildings across 136 acres. The university also has four other campuses in Switzerland (Fribourg, Geneva, Neuchâtel, and Valais Wallis) and EPFL Middle East located in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.
