Émile Durkheim (born April 15, 1858 in Épinal) was a prominent anthropologist, philosopher, and professor. He held citizenship in the Second French Empire and the French Third Republic. Durkheim received his education at several institutions, including the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, École Normale Supérieure, University of Bordeaux, and Leipzig University. His doctoral advisor was Émile Boutroux, and one of his notable doctoral students was Marcel Mauss.
Durkheim is best known for his works 'The Division of Labour in Society' and 'The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life'. He passed away on November 15, 1917, in Paris.
