Ferdinando I de' Medici , born on July 30, 1549 , in Florence , was the Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1587 until his death on February 3, 1609 . He succeeded his older brother, Francesco I, as Grand Duke . Ferdinando was the son of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Eleanor of Toledo .
At the age of 14, Ferdinando was made a Cardinal in 1562, although he was never ordained into the priesthood . His nationality was Florentine .
Ferdinando had several children, including Marie de' Medici, Lorenzo de' Medici, Cosimo II de' Medici (who would become the Grand Duke of Tuscany), Claudia de' Medici, Carlo de' Medici (a cardinal), Maria Maddalena de' Medici, and Catherine de' Medici, who would become the Governor of Siena . He passed away in Florence .
