Firmenich is a private flavor and fragrance ingredient company operating out of Geneva, Switzerland. Firmenich sells fragrances and ingredients for body, oral, and home care products, and flavors for beverages, sweet goods, and savory foods worldwide. Firmenich sells its fragrances, flavors, and other ingredients to customers operating in several industries such as food, beauty, household, fabrics, and pharmaceuticals.
The company was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1895 by a chemist named Pilippe Chuit and a businessman named Martin Naef, and was originally called Chuit and Naef. Fredric Firmenich, son of the landlord of the building Chuit and Neaf rented from, joined the company as a salesman and would later become majority partner, renaming the company in 1934 to Firmenich & Co after Chuit and Naef retired.
On May 3, 2018, Firmenich announced they will be working with the industrial biotechnology company Amyris to develop and commercialize a more cost-effective Z11 molecule. Amyris hopes to produce an intermediate used in the manufacturing of Z11 at a lower cost than Firmenich's current supplier using their bioreactor fermentation technologies. Fermenich is offering Amyris access to their proprietary green chemistry techniques to help further commercialize the intermediate they need for Z11 production.
