FlyBase was created in 1992 and is an online platform where researchers and other users can discover information about drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) genes. It uses primary scientific literature for its database and regularly updates its website.
Researchers can use the search bar on the website and search for topics within specific scientific areas such as human disease, homologs, protein domains, and phenotypes. Users can find information about the drosophila genes and mutations, such as the gene name and symbol, genetic map position, molecular data, bibliographical references, and more. All the genes, alleles, aberrations, bibliographic references, and species documented on the database contain an identifier number so that they can be referenced both within the database and for external purposes.
FlyBase also has cross-referencing capabilities and does so with other genetic and molecular databases. Researchers can also find a directory of scientists and others within the drosophila community.
