Gaspard Monge (1746-1818) was a French mathematician, politician, physicist, engineer, and chemist. Born in Beaune and a citizen of France, Monge's work spanned multiple disciplines and he was the founder of the Polytechnic School.
Monge was educated at the Polytechnic School he founded. As a teacher and mentor, his doctoral students included prominent mathematicians and physicists like Jean-Victor Poncelet and Étienne-Louis Malus. Gaspard Monge died in Paris in 1818.
