Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799) was a German physicist, astronomer, writer, mathematician, French moralist, and philosopher. He was born in Ober-Ramstadt, Germany, and later became a citizen of the country. Lichtenberg received his education at the University of Göttingen, where he was a student under doctoral advisor Abraham Gotthelf Kästner.
Throughout his life, Lichtenberg played a pivotal role in shaping the academic careers of several future scientists. Among his many doctoral students were prominent figures such as Alexander von Humboldt, Johann Tobias Mayer, Johann Christian Martin Bartels, Heinrich Wilhelm Brandes, and Bernhard Friedrich Thibaut.
Georg Christoph Lichtenberg passed away on February 24, 1799, in Göttingen, Germany.
