Google Domains was a domain registration service offered by Google that allowed users to buy, transfer, and manage website domains and connect with website builders like Shopify, Squarespace, Weebly, and Wix. Google Domains allowed users to search for available domains, transfer domains from other registrars, transfer domains between owners within Google Domains, manage and renew domain registration, create up to one hundred forwarded email addresses per domain, and integrate with web hosts to create and improve the domain's web presence. The domain registrar service worked with the latest or second-most recent versions of the Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge browsers.
Google Domains launched out of beta in 2022, after beginning its beta phase in 2015, and was developed to be the easiest place to find, buy, and manage a domain. In general availability, Google Domains was available in twenty-six countries and provided more than 300 domain endings to help users find the right name for their domain needs. Further, the service offered a high-performance DNS to ensure stable and reliable service. The cloud-based DNS servers were offered courtesy of Google Cloud Platform and were normally available as a premium cloud computing solution. Also included were privacy and security features like two-step verification and one-click DNSSEC to bring security to a Google Domains account at no additional cost. Google Domains was also noted for having affordable and transparent pricing, charging a flat rate for domain names with no pricing changes, hidden fees, or additional payments.
On June 2023, Squarespace entered an agreement to acquire Google Domains' business and assets. As part of the acquisition, Google Domains is to wind down following a transition period. The purchase included approximately 10 million domains hosted on Google Domains and millions of customers. Per the agreement, Squarespace will honor existing Google Domains customers renewal prices for a period of twelve months following the closing of the transaction while also planning to offer those customers extra incentive to build a website with Squarespace and use Squarespace's offering.
Further, Squarespace, a long-time reseller of Google Workspace, will become the exclusive domain provider for customers purchasing a domain with a Workspace subscription, which is expected to last for three years. Squarespace is also expected to provide billing and support services to Workspace customers that signed up for the service through Google Domains.
