Greg Brockman is the cofounder and former president and chairman of OpenAI. He is the former CTO of the payment company Stripe.
Brockman attended Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), both of which he dropped out of. At Harvard, he worked with the Harvard Computer Society to administer and build computer systems. While attending MIT, he maintained projects including XVM, Linerva, and scripts.mit.edu. He dropped out of MIT to help build Stripe.
Brockman served as the CTO of Stripe from 2010 to 2015. He joined the company in its beginning stages and dropped out of MIT to help build it. During his time there, Brockman saw the company grow from 4 employees to 250.
Brockman left his position as CTO at Stripe to cofound OpenAI with Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Ilya Sutskever in 2015. OpenAI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building safe artificial intelligence (AI) and ensuring its benefits are evenly distributed. Brockman was OpenAI's president and former chairman. In addition to cofounding the company, he co-led the development of OpenAI's bot.
On November 17, 2023, OpenAI announced that Brockman would be stepping down from his role as Chairman but remaining in his role at the company. This was part of a larger leadership transition announcement, along with the departure of CEO Sam Altman. Later that day, Brockman announced his departure from OpenAI.
